We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and innovative contemporary Youth Choir Conductor to lead and enhance our vibrant senior choral program at the Saint James Music Academy. Our choirs are central to the community vision and educational mission of our institution. The right candidate will foster a collaborative environment for vocal performance, education, and engagement with youth in the Downtown Eastside who are participating in our afterschool program at the Saint James Music Academy. Our senior program runs after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Responsibilities
-Develop and implement a comprehensive choral program from September to June that includes ensembles working on a variety of songs and harmony lines
-Must be able to accomplish performance ready pieces for our Christmas concert in December and our Spring Concert in June
-Conduct rehearsals and performances, ensuring high artistic standards and providing constructive feedback to our students,
-Ability to teach different levels of musical ability ranging from complete beginner to advanced
-Provide mentorship, direction, and support to junior staff and volunteers.
-Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to integrate choral music into broader educational experiences, opportunities to work with musical accompaniment or outside performances
-Assist the Program Director with engaging the community through performances, workshops, and outreach initiatives to promote choral music both onsite and offsite
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
-A minimum of 2 years of experience in choral directing and program leadership
-Previous experience working with youth (10-17 years)
-Demonstrated ability to lead diverse choral ensembles and coordinate successful performances
-Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for working with youth, education and community engagement
Proven track record of innovative programming
-Ability to be flexible in adapting activities to suit group dynamics and response from teens
-Knowledge of modern repertoire across various genres and cultural contexts
-Familiarity with music education best practices
-Excellent problem-solving skills, communication and interaction skills

Compensation:
Hourly rate: $55/hour + weekly preparation time
